A twitter friend sent me to last Wednesday’s link, and at the bottom of that article was a link to this article by Red Book on 7 “Bad” Foods That Are Good For Your Body. I think it’s a great article!

The author, Patricia Curtis, is actually writing the article based on real research. I know it sounds funny to say it that way, but honestly, a lot of these articles are written on myths and old research which serve only to perpetuate bad advice.

I would caution, however, against taking the “tips” section too seriously. The informational part- that’s good. The tips, however, do still facilitate some of these myths. For one, she recommends egg white omelets. I think we know now that yolks are actually the healthiest part of the egg, and quite a bit of research shows that the egg whites may not be good for you as a result of the anti-nutrient avidin.

She also suggests eating low fat cheeses. I recommend not eating low fat cheese, as A.) it tastes lousy, B.) fat soluble vitamins need, um, fat- such as vitamin D which can’t be absorbed without fat, and calcium isn’t absorbed well without vitamin D. So all of that calcium in the low fat cheese is actually going to waste. C.) CLA is found in dairy fat. So why are you spending more for low fat cheese that tastes like plastic, and then spending even more for CLA supplements?

Save some cash, eat real food, spend less on supplements that your body can’t fully absorb, and be healthier.

OK, that was a bit of a rant. Still, the article itself is good- just, avoid the tips.
